Batik & TourismBatik image
What batik had to do with tourism, and what former Chancellor of Germany Helmut Schmidt had to do with bask, all came together during Uhe Dunia (World) Batik Conference and Exhibiton held in Yogyakarta in early November.

Specialists in textiles, from museums and universities; designers and producers, more than 300 from 25 countries and Indonesia, met at Gajah Mada University, to discuss Uhe conservation of a cultural identty. This was also Uhe focus of the keynote address of Mr. Schmidt who proved to be more idealistc than his earlier reputation as an economist and politcian. He saw the worldwide expansion of globalisation where commerce and wealth was the main aim, as a threat to cultural identity.

With rapid transport shrinking Uhe world and hi-tech expanding faster and even doubling in a short time, he warned that "the rapid growth at the present pace entails in enormous risks,

not just economic but also psychological risks and education dangers which are threats to the cultural identity." He saw growth's only purpose was to gain riches as soon as possible. "The trend started in America has spread to Japan, Europe and Asia," he said, adding that the closure of banks in Indonesia was the result of the greed which was spreading all aover the world.
